About Me

I am an aspiring writer looking to publish my first novel. For the past seven years, I've worked as a freelance writer, editor and proofreader. My web site is www.annaphilpot.com

I Am Looking For

I've spent years reading about the publishing industry, and now I want to get hands-on experience and advice. I'm hoping others will help explain some of the pitfalls and concerns within the industry as well as offer insights into how to best tackle the querying process.

My Preferences

I see AQ Connect as a learning tool. I hope to glean more knowledge of the industry and process. I hope to improve both my writing and chance for success. I'd also like to offer support to other aspiring writers. There is some great, unagented and unpublished work out there. With a good support network, there is a higher chance such work will end up where it deserves: on book shelves.

Advice (and maybe a pep talk) about the industry

Thanks, all. The comments are very appreciated. I guess if I can get to the finish line, all the effort will be worth it. Best of luck to you all - I read a lot of the posts, and I really enjoy the advice and more...

Advice (and maybe a pep talk) about the industry

I am currently a first-time novelist. I have published some magazine articles and even had some agents so real interest in my novel. Unfortunately, I haven't had an agent pick up my novel yet. Is it simply a more...

Genres and Publishers: Books that sell

Robb, that's exceedingly frustrating, but I think it's happening more and more right now. I work part time for an agent (in the hopes of learning the business better), and I know a lot of publishing houses are more...

Agent Nephele Tempest Submission Fest

Actually, make that six requests for partials. I received mine on Thursday. Congrats to everyone. This is very exciting! I've been out of the loop - down with a nasty illness and way too many deadlines. more...

Three things that make an agent say yes...

Good point, Robb. I like Donald Maass's book as well. The Taos Summer Writer Conference has an entire class dedicated to voice, which I've heard is very helpful. But how can one's voice shine through without more...

Would love feedback on updated TME Query

Thanks so much, Julie. I am going to have to keep at it to get the wording just right, but maybe I'm finally getting close. Your feedback is invaluable - seriously. I really appreciate your help. Anna

Would love feedback on updated TME Query

Thanks Jfred and Cheryl. You are right. I appreciate all your comments today. This is my alternate I've been working on for the past couple of days. It's much less surgical than the one I posted this morning. more...

Finding New Readers

Yum! I love clotted cream and scones. Sounds like a fascinating site. Are you going to offer your character's favorite dishes? Perhaps that's something I should add to my character profiles.

Would love feedback on updated TME Query

Thanks, Jeff. I really appreciate your comments. It's way easier to sell other people's stuff. I have less invested in it. But that simply must change.
